Ben Miller was born in 1993 in the Philippines. In 1996, he moved to Peru, where he began to take piano lessons at the age of 5. In 2001, he moved to Ithaca, New York, where he continued his classical study under Donna Bloom and Michael Salmirs.
When Ben was 13, he discovered jazz and began to study improvisation with Molly McMillan and John Stetch. He formed small groups with his friends, joined the Ithaca High School Jazz Band, the Ageless Jazz Band, and started to attend summer jazz programs like Jazz in July at UMass Amherst. He even began to learn saxophone. As his love for jazz grew, Ben’s professional career began with solo restaurant, wedding and private party gigs.
Ben went on to study at McGill University’s prestigious Schulich School of Music in Montréal, QC, earning a bachelor’s degree in jazz performance with distinction and a minor in Musical Applications of Technology. His private teachers were Josh Rager, Jan Jarczyk, and Jeff Johnston. While at school, Ben was a proud member of the McGill Chamber Jazz Ensemble and veteran trumpeter Kevin Dean’s Next Generation.
Ben now lives in Brooklyn, NY. Besides frequenting jam sessions around the city, he has performed regularly with groups such as the Jesse Collins Quartet and served as the weekly house pianist of the Williamsburg Music Center’s hosting band.
